Compared to conventional assistive device using the symbols or graphics-like language, microprocessor-based communication boards with individual-tailored switches or keyboards have been better developed for special education teacher or speech therapist [4-5]. The disabled person would point to a symbolic icon or switches for "speaking out" a word or phase in order to communicate with a person. For example, an AAC translator can convert a "drink" icon followed by "yes" icon to express "I want

Design and evaluation of validity of an electronic alternative and augmentative communication system for Persian-speaking children
Introduction: Due to the high prevalence of communication disorders, augmentative and alternative communication methods are one the options ahead to solve the problems of these people. Since there are no complex tools for Persian-speaking children with communication disorders, we decided to design communication assistant software for these children that produces sound output. Many researches show that approximately 50 percent of all autistic children never acquire functional speech. Using Augmentative and Alternative communication System (AAC) is necessary for these children. The Picture Exchange Communication system (PECS) is a communication program that has become widely used, especially with children with autism. This paper, reports the results of a review of the...
متن کاملThe Effects of Word Prediction on Communication Rate for AAC
Individuals using an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device communicate at less than 10% of the speed of “traditional” speech, creating a large communication gap. In this user study, we compare the communication rate of pseudo-impaired individuals using two different word prediction algorithms and a system without word prediction. Our results show that word prediction can incre...
